Setting the SceneIdeal for the first evening or arrival day, the session channels the excitement of finally being here into a personalised visual journal using artist Oliver West’s “Footnotes Grids” system — a playful drawing and annotation technique that helps students capture thoughts, observations, expectations and memorable moments beyond words alone. With over 33 separate Gridding activities available, each workshop can be tailored to the age, focus and needs of your group — from creative exploration and mindful observation to team building, storytelling and reflective journalling. Students creatively map both the landscape around them and their own responses to it, helping them engage more mindfully with their surroundings while building confidence in visual communication and creative thinking. The workshop also works brilliantly as a group-jelling activity, encouraging students to collectively capture and narrate the unique, funny and memorable moments of the trip.

Throughout the trip, students can be set bespoke creative challenges, prompts and “things to look out for”, which are later brought back into play during the Wrap Party — where an additional layer of fast-paced team activities, visual recall games, shared storytelling and surprise challenge rounds transforms their collected Grids into a highly engaging and memorable finale event.

In teams or as individuals, students will be shown how to use drawing based note taking techniques “Footnotes Grids “ to recall and review their days experience. Once armed with a populated Grid the fun begins! Students are encouraged to further detail or showcase from their Grids. ( When run as a team based activity, students will have the opportunity to share various themed “challenges” as a fun way of celebrating the highlights of your visit)This activity provides a fabulous way of recalling the obvious and the random sights, sounds and experiences of the day. The creation of this time capsule piece, ensures that those memories can be kept alive for years to come! The Grids also double as a valuable “where to next “ resource as they provide the building blocks for onward projects.

Whether you choose to walkabout the town or visit a specific site of interest, this workshop encourages participants to create a series of visual notes on the go. This drawing and note taking activity called “Grid-ing” enables individuals to capture everything and anything, abstract or fact In such a way that each “Grid-er” can at a later date piece together the components into a design or a series of themed works. This process of gathering itemised drawn images enables the student to plan beyond a single piece of work and to also consider how to grow not just one idea, but a whole selection of alternatives. This workshop will empower students to adapt and grow a concept, design or piece of art. Learning to keep their options open, students also find that this workshop provides a valuable opportunity to glean and learn more collectively as a group.ORAnnotate It! Geography 2-3 hour workshop for all ages £15 each (perfect for groups sizes 12 - 40+ )Ideal for geographical and historical fact finding field trips. Participants are encouraged to create a series of annotated notes directly in the location of special interest. This drawing and note taking activity called “Grid-ing” enables individuals to capture everything and anything, abstract or fact In such a way that each “Grid-er” goes home with something informative and personally memorable. Ideal for GCSE, A Level and Undergraduate students, who need to learn on the go and then later recall and present. This unique process of gathering information in real time enables the student to capture more of the overall experience as well as the details. This big picture mapping approach can actively enhance experience, whilst gaining skills for continued use throughout the rest of the students studies.
